What Mareel Means to Me

I filmed these interviews on a low resolution DV camera in 2009. The videos formed part of my art school final project and research into Mareel (Shetland's very own Music, Cinema and Education venue).

At the time of filming, the venue was at a crucial tipping point of completing a particularly difficult funding and planning phase. But quite importantly (for the tone of this film), ramping into the construction phase of this important project for Shetland.

Recently when dusting off some old hard drives I found these files - which were originally separate clips. I have spliced them together into one continuous segment.

The footage has never seen the light of day (apart from in my University research). Looking back, it starts to capture an essence of a time of huge change in Shetland and indeed in my own life and journey as a creative practitioner.

Featuring interviews in order of appearance: Murray Arthur Andrew Morrison, Roxane Permar, Marvin Smith, Gwilym Gibbons, Bryan Peterson, John Shewan, Kathy Hubbard. Thanks to Shetland Arts.

Low quality camera, editing and interview skills by Jono Sandilands.
